Royal Greenwich currently has 13 parks with Green Flags and four sites with the Green Flag Community Award. The Green Flag is awarded to parks and gardens that meet strict criteria. The community award is the equivalent award for community groups that maintain a site.

The Green Flag is a national award, recognised by central government.

The sites in Greenwich with Green Flags are:

• Blackheath (awarded jointly with the London Borough of Lewisham)
• Charlton Park
• Eaglesfield Park
• East Greenwich Pleasaunce
• Eltham Park North and Eltham Park South (as one site)
• Eltham Crematorium garden
• Fairy Hill Park
• Horn Park
• Maryon Park
• Sutcliffe Park
• The Tarn
• Well Hall Pleasaunce

Sites are inspected every year by independent judges. The award is held for one year. Sites that want to keep their Green Flag status must reapply every year.

Green Flag Community Award sites in Royal Greenwich

The Green Flag Community Award (formerly the Green Pennant Award) is similar to the Green Flag, but it is awarded to community groups that manage and look after a site.

Sites with a Green Flag Community Award are:

• Plumstead Common Nature Reserve (maintained by Plumstead Common Environment Group)
• Secret Garden in Indus Road (maintained by Charlton Manor Primary)
• Slade Pond at the Slade on Plumstead Common (maintained by Plumstead Common Environment Group)
• Twinkle Park and Charlotte Turner Gardens, Deptford (as one site, maintained by the Twinkle Park Trust).

The Plumstead Common Environment Group and Twinkle Park Trust are Friends of Parks groups that work with us to create better open spaces. Members of these groups have a say on what goes on in local parks.
