Statement about the Avery Hill Winter Garden bid submission
A statement about the Avery Hill Winter Garden Levelling Up funding bid submission from the Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities and Ward Councillors for Eltham Town and Avery Hill.
Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said:
"We are hugely disappointed the Government has chosen not to back Royal Greenwich’s bid to restore the Avery Hill Winter Garden to its former glory, through its Levelling Up Fund.
"Our application had huge community and cross-party support from Eltham Town and Avery Hill ward councillors, local MP Clive Efford, Leader of the Opposition, the Mayor of London, the Friends of Avery Hill, the University of Greenwich, the Eltham Society, Greenwich Parks Forum and the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust.
"We will now need to consider our options as to how a way forward can be found."
Cllr Sammy Backon, Cllr Lauren Dingsdale and Cllr Pat Greenwell, Ward Councillors for Eltham Town and Avery Hill, said:
"Avery Hill Winter Garden is a hidden gem in our area that deserves to be refurbished and brought back into public use so that the public can benefit from it for years to come. This is a terribly disappointing decision."
