What to expect at your appointment

All appointments will be face-to-face at the Royal Greenwich Register Office.

Your appointment should take 30 minutes.

You can bring a close friend or family member with you to the appointment for support.

During your appointment, our registrar will offer you the Tell Us Once service. This helps you to report a death to all relevant government services in one go instead of informing them individually.

If you accept, we’ll give you a reference number so that you can use the service yourself.

Information you will need to give

Our registrars will need to ask you some questions to complete the registration.

This will include questions about:

  • their date of birth
  • where they were born
  • their occupation
  • their address
  • your name and address (as the person reporting the death)

If the deceased person was married, you’ll also need to provide:

  • if she was a married woman, her surname at the time of her marriage and her maiden surname if that's different
  • their husband or wife’s (or late husband or wife’s) date of birth
  • their husband or wife’s (or late husband or wife’s) occupation and if they were retired

If the person who died had a Blue Badge, you can also hand this in at your appointment.

What happens next

We will send a form known as a green slip to your funeral director to give permission for the body to be buried or cremated.

If you haven’t arranged a funeral director yet, we will give the green slip to you.

In some circumstances, a coroner will issue the certificate of cremation.
