Types of childcare

Childminders

Childminders are trained, self-employed carers who usually provide care from their own homes. They can offer you more flexible working hours and look after children up to 8 years old.

Childminders can charge from £4 to £7 per child per hour. This usually includes food, nappies and any outings but some childminders may charge extra fees. Some childminders offer free early years entitlement.

All childminders must register with Ofsted and are regularly inspected.

Day nurseries

Day nurseries offer childcare for children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years old. Some also offer out-of-school care for 5 to 11 year olds.

Day nurseries usually open for normal working hours from 8am to 6pm on weekdays. On average, they charge between £250 and £350 for a full week but costs and opening times may vary.

Most day nurseries offer free early years entitlement.

Nursery schools and nursery classes within schools

Nursery schools offer free early years entitlement for:

  • some 2 years olds
  • all 3 and 4 years olds (up to 5 years if their school place is deferred)

Nursery classes within schools offer free early years entitlement for 3 and 4 year olds. Some nursery classes can also offer free 30 hours entitlement.

Pre-school playgroups

These are organised by community or voluntary groups, usually with the help of parents.

Pre-school playgroups:

  • are for children aged between 2 and 5 years old
  • offer free early years entitlement places
  • give your child access to different resources, equipment and activities
  • give your child the chance to mix with other children

Sessions can last between 2 and 6 hours and take place every day or several days a week, usually during term time. These may include mealtimes where you may need to bring a packed lunch. They usually cost around £5 to £12 per session.

Before and after school or out-of-school care

Some clubs open before and after school and all-day during school holidays. These are for children between the ages of 4 and 14 years old (up to 16 for children with special needs).

Clubs are a quiet space for catching up with homework and fun activities. Many breakfast, after school and holiday play schemes are linked to schools. Some offer activities on top of a normal school day such as music, art, sport or additional study support.

Costs vary and can range between:

  • £6 and £12 a day for after-school clubs
  • £2 and £5 for breakfast clubs
  • £90 to £130 a week for a holiday place

Other options

  • Nannies and au-pairs – you can arrange this if you’re looking for childcare in your own home for children of any age
  • Crèches – these give occasional care for children under 8 years old and are usually linked to an activity or club
  • Babysitters – you can arrange this for childcare in your home for short periods of time. Babysitters are not regulated so you should make sure you’re happy and comfortable with who you choose
