Making sure there are enough staff to support children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) is really important for creating an inclusive and safe environment. Here are a few ways to ensure the right staff-to-child ratio:
- Check Guidelines and Regulations:
- Different places have guidelines about how many staff members are needed when supporting children with SEND. It’s important to know these rules and follow them, as they’re there to ensure safety and adequate support.
- Understand Each Child’s Needs: Before the event, try to get as much info as possible about each child’s specific needs, whether it’s a sensory need, communication support, or physical assistance. This way, you can adjust the staff numbers accordingly to ensure everyone gets the right amount of attention.
- Get Staff with Specialized Skills: It’s crucial to have staff who are trained to work with children with SEND. Whether it’s experience with autism, ADHD, or other needs, having the right expertise makes a big difference in providing quality support.
- Increase Staff Numbers Where Needed: If there are more children with SEND, consider bringing in extra staff to make sure everyone gets the support they need. For example, if you normally have a 1:8 ratio, you might want to adjust it to 1:3 or 1:4 for children with additional needs, depending on what’s needed.
- Incorporate SEND Support Workers: If possible, bring in support workers or teaching assistants who are specifically trained to work with children who have SEND. They can help ensure the children get the attention and support they need.
- Buddies: If a child needs a buddy, any attendance will be paused by JAG until a suitable buddy is in place, this is to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all parties.
JAG undertakes an inclusion consultation with parents ideally at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the holiday period to ensure adequate preparation and booking of the relevant team required.
