Everyone has the right to support that can help care for someone. Knowing your rights can help you make sure you’re getting the support available to you and protect yourself.

Some people start caring for someone over time, for others it happens more quickly. If someone suddenly needs support or gets a new diagnosis, it is okay not to know what they need straight away.

Getting support can help you and the person you care for.  There are support groups, activities and advice drop-ins that are open to everyone who cares for someone.

If you are over 18 and need support to continue to care for someone, you can ask for a carer’s assessment. This isn’t a test, it is a way for us to understand what you need and work with you to find the right support for you. This may be advice, community support or paid services.

Check if you’re entitled to any benefits or financial support 

You may be able to claim Carer’s Allowance if you spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone. There may also be benefits for the person you care for and financial advice drop ins.
