Tired of the city and want to retire to the sea or countryside?

Do your closest family or friends live elsewhere?

You may be able to get help from the Seaside and Country Homes scheme. The scheme helps around 150 households move out of London each year.

Who can apply

To apply for the scheme you need to be:

  • a council or housing association tenant
  • at least 55 years old
  • able to live independently

Financial benefits

Council tenants moving through the seaside and country homes scheme are eligible for:

  • moving costs
  • disturbance costs, such as packing and disconnecting appliances

Council and housing association tenants moving to a home with fewer bedrooms are eligible for £1,000 for each spare room given up.

Available properties

The scheme offers:

  • around 250 vacancies a year
  • flats and bungalows

You should consider that properties may:

  • be some distance from shops and other amenities
  • have limited bus services
  • not be suitable if you have a severe medical condition

Location of properties

Properties are located in coastal and countryside areas. These range from Cornwall in the south-west to Norfolk on the east coast. There are also properties in the Midlands and Lincolnshire.

How to apply

There's no guarantee of a move. To help increase your chances, consider:

  • both flats and bungalows
  • properties that are in low or medium demand
