Industrial processes

We regulate some types of industrial processes that release pollutants (dust, smells or organic solvents) into the air.

Types of processes

There are two types of processes:

  • These are larger industrial processes that have the potential to cause air pollution. Within Royal Greenwich, there are four Part A processes:

    • Greenwich Power Station, Old Woolwich Road, SE10
    • European Colour, Nathan Way, SE28
    • Tate and Lyle Limited Refinery, Tunnel Avenue, SE10
    • Tate and Lyle (Amylum) Ltd CHP Powerhouse, Tunnel Avenue, SE10.

We have copies of the permits from the Environment Agency, as well as pollutant monitoring information. We have added these to our Part A register.

  • These are smaller scale activities that have the potential to cause air pollution. Examples include:

    • Petrol stations
    • Concrete crushers
    • Cement batching plants
    • Roadstone plants
    • Vehicle resprayers.

For advice on whether your business needs a permit, contact our Environmental Protection team.

Apply for a Part B permit

The Local Authority Pollution Prevention and Control (LAPPC) manage this system.

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires you to authorise your business to operate these processes. Authorised or 'prescribed' processes are industrial technologies that have a potential to cause pollution.

You can find out further information about the processes in our Part A and Part B Register.

You can also view the public register at The Woolwich Centre during normal office hours.

Chimney height approval

We also approve chimney heights for industrial and commercial boilers or furnaces. We base this on the type and amount of pollutants coming out of that chimney. The correct height ensures the dispersal of the pollutants doesn't affect local residents.

To check if you need chimney height approval, contact our Environmental Protection team.
