New special school for young people moving forward

Tuesday 21 November 2023

Plans for a new special free school in Royal Greenwich have taken a big step forward as we are now looking for a provider to run the facility.

The new school will provide 240 much needed places for children and young people with autism, from reception through to Year 14.

Split over two sites, we recently consulted on plans for a secondary school and sixth form to be built on the former primary school site at Hargood Road, SE3, by September 2025.

A second phase will provide the primary campus elsewhere in the borough by September 2026.

We’re now at the stage of inviting education providers with a track record of running special schools to put themselves forward to run the new school.

Councillor Matt Morrow, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Due to unprecedented demand for specialist places, more and more young people are having to travel further for their education – or attend schools that aren’t always the best fit for their needs.

“We need a new local specialist school so that children get the support they need in the right place. We want every child to fulfil their potential and having another great local school is a big part of that.

“We are seeking the very best people to provide this service for our children and families.”

Applications for sponsors are now open and details on the specification and assessment process are available on our website.

Mandatory pre-applications must be made by 29 December 2023.
