The Royal Borough of Greenwich is in the running to become London Borough of Culture
The Royal Borough of Greenwich has submitted a bid to become the next London Borough of Culture (LBoC).
The LBoC award offers the winning borough £1.35million of GLA funding to run a year-long programme of cultural events.
Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said, “Our bid to make Royal Greenwich the London Borough of Culture is in!
“With the help of local residents, over 150 local creative organisations and artists and our young people’s advisory group, we’ve developed a bid programme that celebrates the unique stories of the people who make Royal Greenwich such an outstanding borough. We thank each and every person who collaborated with us on this exciting bid.
“The benefits of winning are endless. It would boost our local creative economy, create career opportunities, make inspirational experiences accessible to local people and improve health and wellbeing. And by celebrating our cultures together, we can promote equality and understanding and strengthen our communities.
“It’s time to show the world why Royal Greenwich is the London borough of Culture.”
The Council's proposed programme is based on the stories of more than 1,000 residents and the participation of many thousands more. It will be delivered by organisations, artists, young people, famous faces, volunteers and stakeholders who push the boundaries of arts, culture and technology to deliver new and exciting opportunities.
The programme also focusses on levelling up the disparity between the east and west of Royal Greenwich and celebrates the industrial and working class heritage of the borough.
The London Borough of Culture initiative is part of the Mayor of London’s plans to support the arts in the capital.
As well as the title award, there are also three Cultural Impact Awards up for grabs. These will be in the region of £200,000 for individual projects that take place between 2025 and 2027. The successful boroughs are expected to be announced in March 2024.
