Destination Thamesmead: DLR extension consultation launched

We are excited to launch the public consultation on proposals to extend the DLR to Thamesmead in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and the London Borough of Newham. 

As part of Our Greenwich – the Council’s vision for the next four years - we want to ensure developments deliver positive change for new and existing communities. Extending the DLR to Thamesmead could unlock significant housing potential in Thamesmead, encouraging the construction of around 15,000 new homes alongside vibrant open spaces, shops, leisure, and cultural facilities, but also offer seamless connections across London. 

Councillor Averil Lekau, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said: "Thamesmead deserves improved connectivity. This DLR extension is about unlocking potential, making it is easier, safer and greener to move around the borough and the rest of London.  

“It will encourage more people to use public transport, which is essential to helping us cut our carbon emissions and achieving our Carbon Neutral Plan. We brought the Elizabeth line to Woolwich and Abbey Wood and together we can bring the DLR to Thamesmead.” 

Courtney, a local Thamesmead resident, said: “I currently either have to take the bus to Woolwich or Abbey Wood to access central London but having a station a walk away will really benefit me financially, health wise and open up opportunities for me and my community”.  

Alison, a local Thamesmead resident, said: " Thamesmead has its charm, but being the only postcode area without access to direct train connections and it can feel isolating at times. When I worked in the city commuting would take hours because there's no station in Thameasmead this DLR extension will definitely help reduce journey times for many."   

The proposed DLR extension from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside would connect two Opportunity Areas and four development sites. A new DLR station would be built at Beckton Riverside, with a tunnel built under the River Thames linked to another new DLR station at Thamesmead.
