The Mayor of Royal Greenwich Cllr Jit Ranabhat visited Sherard Road Day Opportunities Centre in Eltham, for the Carers Social Group’s Christmas coffee morning celebrations.

Sherard Road provides support and activities to adults aged 19 to 75 who have learning disabilities and complex needs. Wednesday’s event, organised by the Carers Social Group, was a heartwarming display of community and festive spirit.

Filled with festive cheer, Wednesday's event included a performance from Greenwich Carers Choir, a raffle, and festive karaoke. During the visit, the Mayor spoke with both carers and service users, sharing stories and laughter, and highlighting the importance of such centres in fostering inclusivity and support within the community.

Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr Jit Ranabhat said:

"It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves and celebrating the holiday season together. A huge thanks to the whole community at Sherard Road and to the Carers Social Group for their support in raising over £500 for the Friends of Sherard Road.”

“The money raised from this event will go towards organising more activities and celebrations for the community throughout the year, supporting the Our Greenwich mission that people's health supports them in living their best life.”

Sherard Road Day Opportunities Centre is dedicated to enhancing the lives of adults with care needs, has been a pillar of support for many families across the borough. The Mayor's presence not only boosted the festive spirit but also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to ensuring that every member of the community feels valued and included.

The Carers Social Group, for carers of adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults in Royal Greenwich, meet every Thursday from 10:30am to 12:30pm at Sherard Road. The group is open to all carers in the borough, not only for those caring for adults attending Sherard Road.

As well as regular Thursday coffee mornings, the Carers Social Group also hosts other social activities and information sessions. This is a peer support group where carers can support each other in their caring roles and advocate for one another in a united voice.
