Choose the name of the new leisure centre in Woolwich

Be a part of history and help us name the new leisure centre in Woolwich which is set to open later this year.
The new multi-million-pound venue will provide state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the town, and this is your chance to choose what it will be called.
The three names shortlisted for residents to vote on are:
- MOVE Woolwich
- Woolwich Active
- Woolwich Waves
Residents will have two weeks to vote until midday on Wednesday, 30 April. Votes can be cast by visiting: royalgreenwich.gov.uk/vote-new-woolwich-leisurecentre
Cllr Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We are months away from the opening of our gamechanging new leisure centre in Woolwich. A flagship project for the council, I know that excitement isn’t lost on our residents who will soon be able to take advantage of all the fantastic facilities that will be available to them.
“The new leisure centre is at the forefront of our plan to improve the quality of life and health of our residents. We’ve invested in the health and wellbeing of residents and this new venue will be used for generations to come, so it feels fitting that residents get the chance to name it.”
Once open, the new leisure centre will be home to two swimming pools, water slides, a gym across two levels, a health suite with a spa and sauna, a five-a-side football pitch, sports courts, a creche, soft play and party space, and a cafe.
The leisure centre will play a key part in delivering the priorities set out in Our Greenwich, particularly supporting residents to live their best life by becoming more active as well as tackling the inequalities that exist in health and wellbeing.
Cllr Sandra Bauer, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said: “This is an exciting moment and a chance for our residents to have a say in a project that very soon they will be able to reap the rewards of.
“The benefits of being active are well known but equally important is that all members of the community have access to top class facilities. The leisure centre, or whatever residents choose to call it, will provide exactly that for many, many years to come.”
At 12,800m sq, the three-storey building will become one of the country’s largest urban leisure centres when it opens. The size of the building, which is being built by Morgan Sindall, further underlines our ambitions for the borough.
Cllr Majid Rahman, Cabinet Member for Planning, Estate Renewal and Development, said: “The new state-of-the-art leisure centre sits at the heart of the regeneration programme in Woolwich and when it opens later this year will add to the transformative work that has already been delivered.
“Development should always be used to deliver positive change to an area for existing and new communities. That sentiment has not been lost here, and it is only right that residents get the opportunity to name one of the most important developments in the borough for a generation.
“The regeneration of Woolwich remains a key priority for the council. The leisure centre adds to a strong portfolio of delivery that already includes the refurbishment of Tramshed Theatre, the opening of Woolwich Works, and the extensive improvements throughout the town centre which are making it a more attractive place for people to visit, shop and work.”
