A major milestone has been passed in our £430 million housing programme with the 1,000th new kitchen and bathroom installed as part of Housing Our Greenwich.

Sheila Hassett received a brand-new kitchen installed by Mulalley, who are working on behalf of the council to help us deliver our biggest council housing investment programme in a generation.

Launched last year, the council’s five-year programme aims to enhance the quality of council homes with new or improved kitchens and bathrooms, new roofs, doors, windows and fire, electrical, gas and water safety improvements.

Cllr Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We’re investing millions of pounds to not only improve the conditions of our council homes, but more importantly the experience of the people living in them - so it’s great to be able to mark this significant  milestone as part of our Housing Our Greenwich plan to improve council homes in the borough.

On hand to mark the occasion with Cllr Okereke was Cabinet Member for Housing Management, Neighbourhoods and Homelessness Cllr Pat Slattery, alongside representatives from council contractor Mulalley, who presented Mrs Hassett with a voucher and flowers.

Cllr Pat Slattery, Cabinet Member for Housing Management, Neighbourhoods and Homelessness, said: “It’s Our Greenwich mission to make sure everyone has access to a safe and secure home that meets their needs. Investing in our homes benefits everyone, and so it was lovely to meet Mrs Hassett as our 1,000th recipient of a brand-new kitchen and bathroom in this part of the borough. My thanks to the teams involved who are helping us deliver for our residents so that our residents can have homes they can be proud of.”

Mulalley are contracted to make improvements in the south and west of the borough and reached their 1,000th renovation on 31 March.

Work continues right across Royal Greenwich as the council has set aside over £50 million to make more council homes warmer, greener and cheaper for residents.

Mrs Hassett, who has lived in her Blackheath home for 37 years, said: “I love my new kitchen! I needed a new kitchen for a while, as I’d had my old one for years, so it had served me well, but this is so much better, and I even got to choose the colour scheme. The contractors kept me up to date, and they were polite, clean and tidy – nothing was too much trouble for them, I can’t praise them more highly. I think the council’s doing a great job with improving these, and it’s all worked out beautifully - so I’d like to say thank you.”
