Fresh faces for Greenwich Young People’s Council

The next generation of young people set to make change in Royal Greenwich have been welcomed into Greenwich Young People’s Council (GYPC). The event, held in the iconic Old Royal Naval College, also waved goodbye to young people who have been part of the GYPC since 2023, influencing decisions in the council and welcoming those taking their places.
Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said:
“Listening to children and young people is central to the culture we want to create in Royal Greenwich. Giving a voice to children and young people in decision-making demonstrates our commitment to them and acknowledges their right to shape their own future.
"It increases trust and enables positive change. I am excited to see how we can work together to implement the Children and Young People’s Plan.”
GYPC members are elected by secondary school pupils across the borough, with 13 schools represented in this incoming cohort. GYPC will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of services affecting young people, with candidates advocating for more resources in mental health support and online safety.
Two of the elected representatives will be chosen to be in the Members of UK Youth Parliament and will have the opportunity to speak in the House of Commons on matters affecting young people too.
Timi, who will be handing the GYPC baton over after two years in post said:
“The last few years brought me lots of friends and confidence. I was not only able to grow as a person but also bring a positive impact to my community.
“My advice for the next GYPC is if you believe in something, fight for it. If you hear ‘no’ find another way to fight for what’s right.”
In 2024, the Children and Young People’s five-year plan was established with the help of young people, partners and the previous GYPC cohort. They were instrumental to the development of the plan and will have a long-lasting legacy on services for young people.
The new cohort made up of 20 representatives are undertaking an in-depth training programme before establishing their joint manifesto for their term.
