We are committed to creating a greener, safer, and more sustainable borough. As part of this, our Sustainable Streets programme aims to reduce car journeys and encourage more people to walk, cycle, or use public transport to reduce air pollution and traffic and improve road safety.

The council will be asking residents and businesses in the neighbourhoods of Plumstead, Thamesmead West, Woolwich, Shooters Hill, Kidbrooke/Blackheath, and Charlton what they think about parking and traffic in their areas as well as where they would like to see other improvements and sustainable transport measures.

Councillor Averil Lekau, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability, and Transport, said: “We want to create streets that make better use of our existing road space and pavements. We’re committed to working closely with the community so we can design streets that prioritise people over cars, improve air quality, and enhance our neighbourhoods. Let's make our streets work for everyone. Share your feedback and help shape the designs for your streets.”

Community feedback gathered between 19 February to 19 March will be used to develop tailored design proposals for each area, focusing on:

  • Parking management measure: Prioritising parking for local residents and businesses.
  • Safer road crossing points and cycling infrastructure: This could include new cycle parking storage, improving pavements, and making crossings safer.
  • Reducing traffic congestion: Strategies will be considered to manage traffic flow and reduce the number of unnecessary car journeys.
  • Improving air quality: Planting trees, installing electric vehicle charging points, and encouraging the use of cleaner transportation methods will be key priorities.
  • Creating more attractive public spaces: The program will look at opportunities to improve the streetscape, making it more pleasant for people to spend time in.

Community feedback will be used to shape more detailed potential designs that will be presented back to residents to comment on.
