The Royal Borough of Greenwich will bring residents, council and community leaders together for its Holocaust Memorial Day service on Monday 27 January. The annual event will take place at 10.30am in the Old Library at Charlton House, SE7 8RE.

This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, and 30 years since the genocide in Bosnia.

Led by Councillor Jit Ranabhat, Mayor of Royal Greenwich, the service will feature performances, readings and multi-faith prayers.

Councillor Sandra Bauer, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities said: “On Holocaust Memorial Day, we bring our communities together to remember the millions of victims of genocide across the world.  It is a timely reminder that there is no place for racism, hatred and discrimination in Royal Greenwich.

“This year’s event marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau and explores the theme ‘for a better future’. By reflecting on and learning from the past, together we can take action to make our borough a welcoming and inclusive place, where everyone feels safe.”

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. It’s a time to remember the millions of lives taken during the Holocaust under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur and the Yazidi genocide, as well as those who survived these horrific events.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich also encourages residents to take part in the national initiative to ‘Light the Darkness.’ Join people across the country to place a light in your window on Holocaust Memorial Day at 8pm.

Our event is open to all residents, but spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please email events@royalgreenwich.gov.uk to confirm your place.
