Overview

Sheltered housing could suit you if you want to lead an independent life but need a bit more support. It's also a good option if you're looking to live in a smaller home that's easier to manage.

Living in a sheltered housing property is just like living in a flat but in a more secure and friendly environment.

You'll be supported to remain independent for as long as possible. Sheltered housing properties are not old people's homes.

If you're part of a sheltered housing scheme, you'll be a secure tenant like any other council tenant with similar rights and responsibilities. However, you cannot transfer the tenancy to any other family member and you may not buy your flat.

Who can apply

You can apply if you:

  • are aged 60 and over
  • have been living in the Royal Borough of Greenwich for at least 5 years
  • are not a homeowner

We can also consider applications from slightly younger people if we think sheltered housing would meet your needs.

If you're a couple where only one partner is over 60, we usually approve applications if the age gap is not too big.
