What we can help you with

We'll give you help based on your situation.

We'll tell you what you need to do and how we'll support you.

Depending on your situation, we'll either:

  • give you advice about how to return home, if it's possible
  • give you advice about finding a new home
  • offer you a short-term place to stay while you find a new home

We'll talk to you about what options are realistic for your situation.

You are much more likely to be able to rent privately than to get a social housing property. Most people will be on the housing register for years and may never get a social housing property.

Help to find a new home

We'll help you find a private rented home. This is when you rent from someone who owns the home you live in, known as a 'private landlord'.

Your housing officer will work out the best way to help you do this.

Our help may involve:

  • giving you advice about how to deal with debt and make a budget
  • giving you advice about how to apply for benefits
  • showing you how to search for a home that fits your needs
  • discussing how looking in areas outside London will make it easier to find a property
  • discussing other organisations that can help
  • paying your deposit if you meet the criteria

If we can offer you temporary accommodation

This will be a short-term place to stay. It cannot always meet all your household's preferences. You may need to:

  • move out of the borough or London
  • move at short notice multiple times
  • stay somewhere with limited cooking facilities
  • share with other people, for example, in a hostel
  • rehome your pets
