Apply and organise a Play Street

Step 1: Find out if your street is eligible

Email us to check if we can close your street for a Play Street. For example, it must be a residential street that's not on a bus route.

Email: playstreets-group@royalgreenwich.gov.uk

Step 2: Get your neighbours' support

If your street is eligible, talk to your neighbours to find out if they support the idea.

You could do this:

  • in person
  • on social media, for example, a local Facebook group
  • with a WhatsApp group
  • using our Play Streets introduction letter template

When you apply, you'll need to show that you've spoken to your neighbours and that they generally support the idea.

Step 3: Do a risk assessment and get insurance

You must complete a risk assessment and send it with your application form at step 4.

Download the Play Streets risk assessment form:

You should also get public liability insurance.

Step 4: Fill in and send the application form

Download and fill in the application form:

Send it with the risk assessment and a short description of how you got your neighbours' support, to: playstreets-group@royalgreenwich.gov.uk

We'll then confirm the date of your first Play Street in writing. This can take some time. If you have any questions in the meantime, you can email us.

Step 5: Get ready for the day

You'll need to arrange a volunteer steward at each end of the street. They must escort drivers in or out and allow access for emergency vehicles if needed.

All volunteer stewards must read about how to steward a Play Street and watch the safety video
