Managing your PA

You can set out what you want them to do and how you want them to work with you.

You may want to agree:

  • rules about timekeeping
  • communicating and talking about issues
  • what you expect from them
  • how you want them to behave in your home such as taking their shoes off, not smoking
  • how they should provide your care and support
  • clear tasks that they’re trained and able to handle
  • how you negotiate extra shifts or extra hours

You must be reasonable, for example you cannot tell them they cannot eat or drink in your home unless their visit is very short.

You must provide a safe working environment. You cannot expect them to lift you or do heavy manual tasks without the right equipment.

You should make sure your PA has the training needed to do to tasks you’ve agreed.
